Smiling Critters
You play a Smiling Critter. Escape from Playtime puts that toy line in your hands for a co-op horror run through the abandoned factory. Early Access plans the full eight-character roster. The open beta does not make every Smiling Critter playable.
Not all of the Smiling Critters will be playable in the October 1 to 4 test. The eight character names have not been announced, so there is no lineup to brief. The toys are the dead-eyed line with gaping smiles introduced in Poppy Playtime Chapter 3.
Who you are in the factory
The playable body is a Smiling Critter moving through classrooms, warehouses, testing labs, and the dark corridors that join them. Other rejected Playtime Co. creations are the hunters, not the crew. You scavenge, you listen for the Voice, and you bring parts back. A panicked whisper can end the run.
The beta crew is not the full set. Early Access is the build that plans the full eight-character roster, along with one starter zone and a core enemy lineup. Colors, catchphrases, and move lists are not known yet. The picture shows three plush toys climbing a painted wall, a group image rather than eight labeled portraits.
Treat the plush group in the picture as a poster, not a selectable roster. Early Access is when the full eight-character roster is planned, and the beta simply does not field every toy.
CatNap, the voice box, and a downed toy
CatNap belongs to the cartoon lore: a recalled toy whose calming gas gave children nightmares. That is not a playable kit in the beta. Do not pack a loadout around CatNap until that toy is named as a crew member.
The Smiling Critter voice box light is inconsistent in the open beta, and that fault has no workaround. Disassembling Critters too quickly after death can hang the game and block spectating. A Critter may die instantly after being revived by the Syringe. Those three faults are the practical limits on a downed teammate during the test.
Calming gas and nightmares are the cartoon reason CatNap was recalled. They are not a beta ability, a weapon, or a confirmed kit, so do not brief a friend to pick that toy on October 1. That recall is cartoon lore only.
What the beta withholds
The open beta does not include every puzzle, every enemy type, or the lore-focused content. Playing one Smiling Critter in the first four shifts is the test, not a tour of the whole toy line. Early Access is also where the community is expected to shape the game, with 1.0 later.
Party size for the game is 1 to 4 players total: solo, or you plus up to 3 friends. The beta's higher cap of up to 8 players, with 4 recommended, is a test allowance and not the Early Access party rule. Proximity voice still matters, because a microphone is not required and there is no in-game text chat.
A voice box that flickers does not change who you are playing, and it does not add a named eighth critter.
The syringe revive can fail immediately, so a downed friend is not safe just because the item was used.
Spectating can lock if a body is taken apart too fast, which is a beta hang rather than a rule of the toy line.
The factory visit sits some time after the Hour of Joy, which is the setting, not a character biography.
Separate development from the Poppy Playtime chapter team means this roster is being built by a different group.
The playable body is one Smiling Critter for the beta, and the other toys in the group art are not a promise of eight selectable kits.
Early Access is the build that talks about the full eight-character roster, while the October test keeps some of those toys out.
A voice box light that flickers is a beta fault, and it does not reveal a hidden name on the toy you are holding.
Spectating can lock if a downed body is taken apart too quickly, so give the hang a moment before you mash the prompt.
The Syringe can bring a friend up and the same friend can drop again immediately, so a revive is not a safe stand-up.
Party size for the shipped game is you alone or you plus up to three friends, which is 1 to 4 players total.
The beta cap of eight is a test allowance inside the first four shifts, not the size of the Early Access party.
CatNap stays in the recalled-toy story, with calming gas and nightmares, until that name is a playable kit.
Mini Mode lets a Smiling Critter crawl, jump, and climb through the factory. No speed or height number is published for those moves, so the speed change you can plan around is Zoomies.
Proximity voice and the lack of text chat mean a critter who wanders off has to be found by glowsticks and landmarks.
The separate team building this game is not the chapter team, so do not expect chapter move lists to transfer.
Lore-focused scenes are among the things the beta leaves out, which is why these toys do not have biographies yet.
A friend who asks for a favorite toy should hear that the beta simply does not field the whole line.
